She helps young audiences to recognize the power within them to make a positive in their world. Through story telling, The Tea Lady teaches children to realize their own personal worth and to look for good in others. Desiree is the author of the Once Upon a Tea Pot Collection of books complete with original songs designed to solidify the important message of her stories through musical interaction. "It is so rewarding," says Arney, " when I look into wide eyed little children so eager to learn; it is so important that they are taught things of value and substance." Incorporating writing and illustrating into curriculum

John Jannenga’s love of art was evident early in life when he received his first art scholarship in 3rd grade.  He attended Des Moines Technical High School where he majored in commercial art.  His drawings have been used to illustrate a number of teaching materials and screen print designs.  His fine art has been displayed at numerous art fairs.  John works out of his studio in Oskaloosa, Iowa and believes everyone has a story.     Marty Kelley Marty Kelley
Writing process through artist in residence program

Marty Kelley was born in Manchester New Hampshire where he now resides and is a children’s author and illustrator, His work has spanned many careers including a second grade teacher, a baker, a cartoonist, a newspaper art director , a drummer in a heavy metal band and  animator.  Now he says he’ll probably continue writing and illustrating children’s books. Some of his published works are, Fall is Not Easy, The Rules, Winter Woes, Summer Stinks and the soon to be released Spring Goes Squish.

In his spare time Kelley visits schools and speaks to students about how he makes books.  He is available to travel anywhere in the country.  Kelley’s Artist in Residence Program consists of spending five days or more at the school making books with the students.  They will be guided through the entire process of writing and illustrating their own class books.     Janette Kirksey Janette Kirksey

Janette Kirksey, known as Grandma Kirksey, was born in western Pennsylvania and now lives in Ohio near her children and grandsons. After retirement in 2003 she was an elementary substitute teacher until she finally followed her dream to write children books. Janette is the author of the Grandma and Me” series of children books complete with an audio CD of original songs designed to get the children up and moving. The series is unique in that they feature everyday adventures that children and grandmothers (or parents) can identify. Grandma and Me books will be enjoyed by children and parents again and again. Two new books will be available in 2008, “Grandma and Me go to the Park” and “Grandma and Me go to the Zoo”. She also has plans to write children books for children between the ages of 7 to 10.

Presentations are geared to preschool, pre-K. 1st and 2nd grade students, and are filled with singing, dancing, story telling, learning about writing picture books and the writing process. As part of the presentation she will do a book reading. The presentation is 1 hour and may extend to 1 hour and 45 minutes. Her presentations focus on interaction with students, having fun and enjoying the visit. Grandma Kirksey will have a light snack (provided by school) with the class and sign books if requested. Amy MacDonald
Where do ideas come from?
Internationally known author, Amy Macdonald is the author of fourteen books, including Little Beaver and The Echo, Rachel Fister’s Blister, Cousin Ruth’s Tooth, Quentin Fenton Herter III, No More Nice and No More Nasty.  Her books have won worldwide acclaim; translated into 25 languages, they’ve topped the “Best Children’s Book” list in the United States, England, and the Netherlands, and won or have been short-listed for many major awards.  Her school presentations and writing workshops have been given in Europe, Africa and the U.S., and she was invited to join the roster of teaching artists as part of the Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts in Washington.  Her nonfiction has appeared in publications around the world from Europ magazine to the New Yorker.  MacDonald is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Maine with her family.

Poetry

Making SENSE of your writing
Utilizing the five senses, Matott show students how to bring the reader in to experience a story, not just read it.

Grandparent unit
An author in residency favorite. This unit will not only show a student the value of good research, but will enrich the student's sense of place within their family. Also used with "adoptive grandparents" from nearby retirement communities.

Creative Non-fiction unit
Matott shows how through unique points of view and other techniques a non-fiction based story can come alive!

Picture book unit
Utilized in Matott's standard Creative Writing Worship, this fun and imaginative unit is a student's favorite. Within 45 minutes the entire classroom forms the beginning of a fun picture book. Matott writes a rhyming prompt, which the students then complete in their classrooms.

Writing, editing and revisions
Ann Parr was born and raised in north central Kansas and earned her Bachelor of Music Education from Emporia State University and a MFA in writing for children from Vermont College in 2004.  She has taught in the elementary schools and writes for many publications. Her published books include a biography, Gordon Parks, NoExcuses written for children ages 9 to 12, and biography Coach Tex Winter: Triangle Basketball.

She will travel throughout the United States if the school pays travel expenses, for a two consecutive day workshop.  Without overnights, she will travel up to a 200 mile radius of Salina, Kansas, with school paying mileage.

Parr’s workshops are customized depending on the scope of the project.  She can schedule one day to orient teachers and meet with students to describe a story skeleton and guidelines for writing the story.  This would include handouts that they use for reference.  She would meet with students again after they have a first draft of their stories, for editing and revisions prior to illustrations.  After students have received their books, a reception is held for parents and friends when some students may read their stories. Renee Riva has been writing humorous stories ever since she won her first writing contest in the second grade.  A former greeting-card verse writer and popular speaker, Renee has also published two children's books, Izzy the Lizzy, and Guido’s Gondola. The Ins and Outs of Publishing
Learn what the publishing world is all about.  Follow the process of book publishing from start to finish. Presentation: 30 minutes, all grade levels, any size group, easily combined with Author Workshop. Other presentations and writing workshops are available.

Suggested Audience: Grades K-8
Honorarium: $900 per day plus expenses for a full-day visit, $500 plus expenses for a half-day visit.  Half-day and multiple-day visits are also available for a reduced fee.  Discounts are available if other schools in your district schedule presentations during the same week.

David Michael Slater was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and teaches middle school in Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife Heidi and son, Max.  Slater writes for children, young adults and grown-ups.  Some of his published works include, The Bored Book, Comin’ through, 7 ate 9 and Missy Swiss.  Slater will read books with a slide show presentation to any size group.  In addition, he will present an informative tour through the writing and submission process designed to encourage students to engage in the process. He also can present an informative lesson on the element of plot design to encourage kids to write their own stories.     Joesph Zabrosky Joseph Zabrosky
Road to communication through character development

Joseph Zabrosky, a child at heart, began his professional career as an actor and screenwriter in Hollywood.  He went on to work for Kevin Costner at Tig Productions/Warner Brothers.  Upon leaving Hollywood, he founded Our Father’s Productions/Elohim Books, which creates children’s stories, screenplays, and television programming.  Joseph authored and produced a four-book series entitled Yeshua’s Lessons in Life series, which includes Herbie Hanson, Rudy Cazootie, Sunny and Hunny and The Christmas Tree. He recently signed with Performing Artist Management who will promote his workshops throughout schools in the Midwest United States.

He is willing to fly wherever anyone wants him, although he will only travel by car five hours.

Joseph has designed different workshops for school age writers: “The Journey of an Artist/Writer” is a road to communication using the craft of writing with the development of character.  Joseph uses song, visualization, games and writing to explain the journey. “Creative Writing” works with students to develop the structure of writing.
