John Jannenga Incorporating writing and illustrating into curriculum John Jannenga’s love of art was evident early in life when he received his first art scholarship in 3rd grade. He attended Des Moines Technical High School where he majored in commercial art. His drawings have been used to illustrate a number of teaching materials and screen print designs. His fine art has been displayed at numerous art fairs. John works out of his studio in Oskaloosa, Iowa and believes everyone has a story. He portrays stories as moments of time in life through illustrations. His work with educators to incorporates writing and illustrating to meet benchmark units. Marty Kelley Writing process through artist in residence program Marty Kelley was born in Manchester New Hampshire where he now resides and is a children’s author and illustrator, His work has spanned many careers including a second grade teacher, a baker, a cartoonist, a newspaper art director , a drummer in a heavy metal band and animator. Now he says he’ll probably continue writing and illustrating children’s books. Some of his published works are, Fall is Not Easy, The Rules, Winter Woes, Summer Stinks and the soon to be released Spring Goes Squish. In his spare time Kelley visits schools and speaks to students about how he makes books. He is available to travel anywhere in the country. Kelley’s Artist in Residence Program consists of spending five days or more at the school making books with the students. They will be guided through the entire process of writing and illustrating their own class books. Janette Kirksey Janette Kirksey, known as Grandma Kirksey, was born in western Pennsylvania and now lives in Ohio near her children and grandsons. After retirement in 2003 she was an elementary substitute teacher until she finally followed her dream to write children books. Janette is the author of the Grandma and Me” series of children books complete with an audio CD of original songs designed to get the children up and moving. The series is unique in that they feature everyday adventures that children and grandmothers (or parents) can identify. Grandma and Me books will be enjoyed by children and parents again and again. Two new books will be available in 2008, “Grandma and Me go to the Park” and “Grandma and Me go to the Zoo”. She also has plans to write children books for children between the ages of 7 to 10. Presentations are geared to preschool, pre-K. 1st and 2nd grade students, and are filled with singing, dancing, story telling, learning about writing picture books and the writing process. As part of the presentation she will do a book reading. The presentation is 1 hour and may extend to 1 hour and 45 minutes. Her presentations focus on interaction with students, having fun and enjoying the visit. Grandma Kirksey will have a light snack (provided by school) with the class and sign books if requested. Joseph Zabrosky Road to communication through character development Joseph Zabrosky, a child at heart, began his professional career as an actor and screenwriter in Hollywood. He went on to work for Kevin Costner at Tig Productions/Warner Brothers. Upon leaving Hollywood, he founded Our Father’s Productions/Elohim Books, which creates children’s stories, screenplays, and television programming. Joseph authored and produced a four-book series entitled Yeshua’s Lessons in Life series, which includes Herbie Hanson, Rudy Cazootie, Sunny and Hunny and The Christmas Tree. He recently signed with Performing Artist Management who will promote his workshops throughout schools in the Midwest United States. He is willing to fly wherever anyone wants him, although he will only travel by car five hours. Joseph has designed different workshops for school age writers: “The Journey of an Artist/Writer” is a road to communication using the craft of writing with the development of character. Joseph uses song, visualization, games and writing to explain the journey. “Creative Writing” works with students to develop the structure of writing.
